Updated: Apr 15, 2021

At Joe’s Health Hut, we strive to promote healthy eating to ensure a lifestyle that is sustainable for all walks of life. That is why our owner and CEO took the time to share with you 5 foods that promote gut health and to maintain a well-balanced digestive system.

To start, you must understand what exactly ‘digestion’ is and what it means for us. Digestion is a series of steps that are needed to be completed to break down the foods you eat which turn into nutrients for our bodies. This seemingly simple task allows our bodies to absorb the vitamins, minerals, calories, fats and proteins you need. More often than not people suffer from some sort of digestive problem, which can most likely be solved with a healthier diet!

Here are our recommended foods to aid in digestive health: (In no particular order)

1. Water

· Although this seems to good to be true…it is in fact true! Staying hydrated throughout the day helps in many facets of your life, one of them being your digestive system. According to Everyday Health, fluids play an essential role in partnership with fiber to get solids through your system. This is considered to be the easiest digestive tip to follow.

2. Legumes

· Legumes or Beans are extremely beneficial for digestion. The key to their success is fiber. Fiber should be a staple in your diet, the amount you consume each day can vary, but be consciously aware that you need fiber in your diet to have a happy healthy tummy. They are the perfect high-fiber low-fat food. The best part about legumes is they come in all shapes and sizes. A few great options to consider are: Kidney beans, lentils and chickpeas.

3. Greek-Yogurt

· This creamy dairy product has entered millions of households because of the profound effects it can make on a meal and on your gut. Greek yogurt not only contains more protein than traditional yogurt, but it also is fermented, which gives it very special properties. The fermentation gives this delightful product healthy bacteria. This bacteria feeds on the lacrosse and releases lactic acid. On average, you get around 10 million grams of probiotics per serving.

4. Kombucha

· This one is simple…kombucha is ‘alive’ in the sense that there are millions of bacteria in a single bottle. These probiotic properties gained from the fermentation process aid in balancing the gut biome. However, watch out for Kombucha’s that are sold with added sugars or natural flavorings.

5. Apple

· Interestingly enough apples can help with inflammation in your colon and increases stool bulk within your digestive tract. Apples contain abundant amounts pectin and soluble fiber, which is linked to a healthy digestive system.
